Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the global hospitality sector, disrupting operations, reducing revenues, and forcing many businesses to close temporarily or permanently. In Sokoto, a state known for its cultural tourism and hospitality services, the pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of the sector to external shocks. Hotels, restaurants, and event venues experienced significant declines in patronage due to lockdowns, travel restrictions, and changes in consumer behavior.

Post-pandemic recovery in the hospitality sector requires innovative strategies to rebuild consumer confidence, adapt to new safety protocols, and diversify revenue streams. Sokoto’s hospitality stakeholders must implement effective measures to ensure long-term sustainability and competitiveness. This study investigates the recovery strategies adopted by Sokoto’s hospitality sector following the pandemic, focusing on their effectiveness and areas for improvement.

Statement of the Problem

The hospitality sector in Sokoto was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in financial losses, job cuts, and reduced customer demand. Although recovery efforts have been initiated, there is limited understanding of their effectiveness in addressing the sector's challenges. Additionally, the lack of documented recovery strategies hampers knowledge-sharing and preparedness for future crises. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining pandemic recovery strategies in Sokoto’s hospitality sector and identifying best practices for sustainable recovery.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Sokoto’s hospitality sector.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of recovery strategies implemented by hospitality businesses in Sokoto.

  3. To recommend sustainable strategies for enhancing resilience in Sokoto’s hospitality sector post-pandemic.

Research Questions

  1. What was the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Sokoto’s hospitality sector?

  2. How effective are the recovery strategies adopted by hospitality businesses in Sokoto?

  3. What sustainable strategies can enhance the resilience of Sokoto’s hospitality sector post-pandemic?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted Sokoto’s hospitality sector.

  2. The recovery strategies implemented by hospitality businesses in Sokoto are only partially effective.

  3. Sustainable recovery strategies will enhance the resilience and competitiveness of Sokoto’s hospitality sector.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the hospitality sector in Sokoto, examining the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recovery strategies employed by businesses. Limitations include the availability of data from hospitality operators and the dynamic nature of recovery efforts, which may evolve during the study.
